   Mumps: An old man had to put a halter around the neck of the person affected and lead him three times across a river flowing to the north. Warts: Some one had to find a snail and with it make the sign of the Cross on them; then hang the snail on a bush and as it withered the warts disappear. Whooping Cough: A person was supposed to be cured of this disease if he got three bits of food from a married couple if the wife had the same surname as the husband before marriage.
