- In former times many poor people travelled round the County and they were generally welcome visitors to a house - they always got bread and milk or something in everybody's house and a night's lodging in the house they reached at nightfall and they told stories and gave the news of distant parts and the people they called were glad, for papers were not plentiful as now.The poor man or woman would get a bed in the kitchen near the fire and made as comfortable as possible for the night. Usually they had their own food which they got in other places they called at.
