The roofs were formed by long poles of bog-oak being joined together at the "coupling" and wattles were intertwined between these. Then this was plastered with a wet mixture of clay & lime. In some cases rushes were cut and mixed with the mortar in order to make it tough.
The Pig used come into the kitchen and eat food that had been placed in one of the holes in the floor. Half-doors were very common and were on almost all the country houses.
In nearly all of these houses there was a bed in the kitchen. The bed was a wooden structure and was built into the wall and curtained off in the day-time. They were called "Pouches."
