- (continued from previous page)were emptied on the basket. The water flowed off and the potatoes remained in the basket which was placed on the pot in the centre of the floor. All the family gathered round with tins of buttermilk and had dinner. The salt cellar was placed in the centre on top of the potatoes.
"Kreels" were also made from rods. There were put across a straw mat on a donkey's back and were used for carrying turf from the bog. When the men used to be working at the turf, the woman-of-the house used bring the dinner to them in the "kreels" and then take home a load of turf.
There were not many carts in the country then, and only a very odd farmer owned a horse. The donkey was used for all the farm work. When planting potatoes the manure was brought out to the field in "Bardógs" or "Panniers". Bardógs were shaped like two boxes which were carried across the donkey's back over a straw mat and the harness used was called a straddle. The bottom of a bardóg was movable(continues on next page)
