- This snowfall occured on the month of January 1891. Frost and cold dry weather proceeded it for weeks. The snow fell unexpected as it started about two o'clock in the morning. It stayed ten weeks on the ground and it stayed on the mountains from January until the end of March.
During that time men were employed to clear the roads. Farmers were able to do nothing in their farms. - Molahiffe Hedge School was situated in the townland of Molahiffe. A man by the name of Denis McGillicuddy was the teacher. He was living in Molahiffe and was also born there. His pupils paid him by giving him potatoes and butter. They did their writing with slate. Irish was taught in the school.
