- 1. Rockfield Hedge-school
This school was situated in Rockfield, Faha, Beaufort. It was at the southern gable of Daniel Bowler's dwelling-house.
It was a mud-walled, thatched cabin containing two rooms and a kitchen. One room and the kitchen were knocked down in the year [?]. The last occupant, Daniel Bowler, now lives in a concrete-walled, tiled house. The remaining room of the old house is used as a stable.
Daniel MacGillicuddy was the teacher in the school. He owned the house. He came to the district from Ardlahas.- Collector

- James Shea, Boulia, Firies, Farranfore,who was born about the year 1817 went to School there. Cornelius Shea, son to James Shea was born about the year 1857 and went to the same school. MacGillicuddy was the teacher all the time. Cornelius Shea still lives. He went to the hedge-school for two or three years and afterwards to Ballinilane National School. He remembers MacGillicuddy as a very old man and thinks that the hedge-school came to an end at about the time he went to Ballinilane.(continues on next page)
