The creature was frightened and he gasped and coughed pitifully until at last he coughed up a heap of books. "Ooh!" says the king. "Well I took up one of the books and I opened it and what do you think I read there"? "What"? says the king. "That your father was in service by my father". "You lie", says the king and the youth smiled at his own success for none could keep the kingdom or the princess from him now.

   On the farm of James Maybury - deceased - of the townland of Cahir in this parish, there is an opening to a subterranean passage which is supposed to lead to a liss which I never have been able to locate. The local people say that the floor of this passage is strewn with human bones but of late years no-one has investigated the matter and the mouth of the passage is overgrown with nettles and briars. There is a story which says that this James Maybury had a fine white cow called "Bawny". Every
