- There was a hedge-school in my village once. It was a barn. They had stone seats. On slates they used write. They had no desks and they had to leave the slates on their knees.
The teachers name was Michael Coen. The teachers at that time was very poor as the government used give them no pay. The children had to give them a few shillings for teaching them. The children also had to support the teachers. The teacher used go to each child's house and the child's mother would give them a back room to sleep in. The barn that was kept as a school is to be seen yet.- Collector
