- When Ned's father was young, he and other men from shanbogh and surrounding district used travel to Tipperary to dig potatoes - which at that time were always sown 'in ridges'. They usually went to Carrick - spade on shoulder and were there hired by the farmers. "You might hire a goodfellow" said Ned, "or, you might hire a devil."
They were given potatoes three times a day and though there was always meat curing in the rafters - on only one occasion in years did they ever get a bit.
On Saturday nights they went into Carrick-town and indulged in the luxury of a cup of tea.
He stated they often earned ten shillings a week at this work.- Informant
