    There were several industries carried on in Gowran and the surrounding districts. The principal of these was Starch making, nail making thatching, forge work, and lime burning.The Starch factory was situated one hundred yards on the upper side of St. Mary's Abbey the ruins of this factory have now completely disappered.
    The nail making was carried on in the lower end of the town. These nails were sold for ten a penny.
    Thatching was largely carried on in the surrounding districts.
    Forge work is still carried on but (it) not quite so much as it used to be. There were
