to Carrickmacross, Gartlan released the whiskey into the lake to evade tax, and he was impoverished as a result.
A very famous election occurred in Mongaghan when Gartlan of Monalty was beaten by Phelan of Carrickmacross. The clergy supported Phelan but Gartlan was very popular with the people of Carrickmacross and Donaghmoyne. For this reason the election was very warmly contested and the old people of Carrickmacross and Donaghmoyne recall vividly that famous election.
