    ready for use. Should a number of ropes be required they can be quickly and cheaply made in this way without going to the trouble and expense of buying a hemp rope.
    Many people who grow flax keep a few streaks of flax which they use mostly to make strings. These strings they make by hand and are called flax strings and when properly made are very strong. They are used to tie bags of oats and when "bisums" were commonly used the strings were used to lap the heather sprigs which formed the shank of the bisum.
