    We have still a shoe-maker in every district but his work at present does not consist so much in the making of new shoes as formerly but in the repair of worn or partially worn ones. This was not so some years ago as most of the boots or shoes worn by the people were made at home and these being of a more lasting kind than the machine-made type worn at present, they were frequently repaired a very radical and somewhat expensive kind of repair being what was locally called "vamping and soling".
