- There were a lot of hedge schools in the locality long ago, before the National schools came out. There were two in Rossmore, one in Ballyhupahawn and there were many others in the locality. Sometimes a master taught in them and on other occasions a very good scholar taught the pupils.
The children had to pay from one penny to four-pence per week, to the master for teaching them. He used a black-board and chalk for teaching, he also used books.
It was usual for every scholar to take a few sods of turf with him in the Winter time.- Collector
