- Long ago every farmer had his own lime kiln, from which he got his own supply of lime, to purify his fields and to white-wash his houses.
The kiln was made of stones and it was built in the shape of a circle. They put about one cwt of fine coal into it to burn the lime, the also used turf.
The fire-place was in one end of the kiln.
When the lime stones were thoroughly burned, the people that owned the kiln filled up their lime and put it into a heap.- Collector
