- In Kilmainham about three miles from Mountmellick there was a monastery in olden times. In Cromwell's time the monks who lived there were driven from it and they went to live in Kilmainham in Dublin. They called their monastery after the one which is at the Rock outside Mountmellick town. Kilmainham means Cill na Manac or the church of the monks. There is an under-ground tunnel from it to the Ivy Chapel and the monks used to take refuge there in time of attack.
