- There are six forges in this parish of which three are in Mountmellick, one Thyra,one in Kilcavan, and one in Garrymore. They belong respectively to Delaney,Fennely, Forestal,Curran, Hyland and Callaghan. Some of their ancestors were smiths for many years. Three of these forges are situated near cross road, the remaining being situated in the town.Most of the roofs are made of slate while the rest of them are made of iron.All the doors are of a large size and suitable enough for a car to go through. Each forge has only one fire place.The smith uses a number of implements namely, hammer,pincers,rasp,fuller punch etc, A smith does not make all classes of farm implements except harrows and grubs.(continues on next page)
