- Houses long ago were not near a s good as now. Long ago they used to thatch their houses with bog sods and rushes but now they have wheaten straw for the purpose.In these houses there was only one big room and usually they had a settle bed and it was at the farthest point from the fire. The fireplace was situated at the end of the house and it was on the ground.The chimney was very wide and they had a bar across for hanging pots on. They burned turf and wood mostly.Windows were sometimes made from a dried bladder of a cow or a pig. Then they got glass and these windows were very small and could not open.
