  1. The townland of Ballypickas Lower or Bernard's grove is situated about three miles from Abbeyleix. It derives it's name from a Gentleman named Pickett who lived at Bernards grove where Gorman's now reside. Ballypickas was formely a village or a small town and the ruins of old houses now known as The Street" still remain to be seen. Many of those families emigrated to America after the famine
