I am a young fellow that ran out my lands and means...

    (continued from previous page)
When we reached into London the police were on the quay,
'S bhí barántaisí sgríobhta sa "Telegraph News" ó indé.
We both were detected and sent at once to jail
Is tugadh thar n-ais go Cluainmeala sinn chun ár gcuis do phléidhe."
On the day of our trial her mother she swore severe,
Gur rógaire mise bhí ag imtheacht le fán an t-saoghail,
That her daughter was simple and I was a scheming rake
Is gur bhuaileas-sa bob uirthi i ngan fhios do'n tsaoghal go léir.
The court were in silence and the jury then were charged
Is d'fhiafruigheadar dhínn an raibh aon nidh againn le rádh.
She showed them the will that her father bequethed of late
Is gur fhág sé ag an ainnir an fheirm go léir 's a réim.
The barrister read the last will that her father made,
Is d'fhiafruigh de'n ainnir ar bpósfadh sí an Réic gan céim.
She swore that I was a most-loving genteel young swain,
Is ná posfadh sí mo mhalairt go sínfidhe í síos fé'n gcré.
When I was acquitted my true-love I did embrace,
Is chuadhas go dtí an sagart chun mé ceangailt le grádh mo chléibh
He put on the knot and 'twas easy he got his change
Agus mhaireamar go sásta idir Carraig na Siúire is Fíodhárd.

The words were pronounced like the ordinary country folk pronounced them. The music of this song I knew by heart - a very simple little air.
