- Fairs were held in Mayo in the parish of Doonane and in Timahoe about ninety years ago. These fairs were stopped in the end because the people were always fighting at them. There was one old woman who used to be at the fair of Mayo and she used go around with a stone in a stocking saying "Twelve o' clock and never a stroke struck." There is an old saying "It's all over like the fair of Mayo." When a bargain was made the man who bought the beast would run a stick along the gutter and mark the beast. That was a sign that the bargain was made. When a man is selling, he gives the halter.
