COMMON COLD.
For a cold in the head :-
1. Make oatmeal gruel, add a good lump of butter to this and drink is as long as you can bear, just as you go to bed at night.
2. Boil or “scald” butter-milk and use it the same way butter may be added as needed.
3. Roast a big onion, put it in a tea-cup and fill up cup with sugar. Let it stand a couple of hours then sip the liquid slowly.
4. Black-currant jam drink. Pour boiling water on a tablespoonful of black currant jam. Squeeze juice of quarter of lemon and drink as long as possible.
5. Drink hot turnip water. To relived stiffness in the nose, light a shallow candle and rub the nose with it, especially the bridge of the nose.
6. For cold – slew onion in water, eat onion liquid as hot as possible.
To prevent cold developing –
1. Pour a spoonful of friars Balsam in a jug of hot water and inhale.
2. Sniff dry bread soda.
3. Take a good drink of hot rum-punch.
4. Eat a few cloves of garlic raw.
5. Buttermilk gruel – Boil the buttermilk, add a handful of oatmeal, cook, add new milk and sugar to ladle. Drink hot. Add a little fresh butter to this if liked.
6. Take a hot pool bath (adding mustard and water). To bed immediately.
