- It is believed the forts which are to be seen scattered throughout this country
have survived since the time of the tribes in Ireland. Each tribe had a king and they were constantly fighting so that life and property were always in danger. People built their houses of wood and made a thick circular dyke of clay around them for protection. The houses have disappeared but the dykes remain and are called forts.
