  1. Long ago when there were no doctors there were men known as "quack" doctors who were supposed to have cures for different diseases. The quack doctor sometimes cured a person by saying strange words over them or by giving them some charm to wear.
    If a man had a toothache he was told not to shave on Sunday, if a woman had it she should not sew on a Sunday or eat meat on a Wednesday. Food that a ferret leaves over is supposed to be a cure for whooping cough. A woman how had a sick daughter washed her in the waters of a holy well which is
