    spoke to the butcher who promised not to cause any further noise. That night the yank went to bed at the usual hour and, when the butcher retired about half past twelve he was fairly drunk. Having taken off one shoe he cast it from him as was his usual custom. Then it suddenly dawned on him that he had promised not to cause any more annoyance to the yank. He then took off the other shoe and placed it on a chair.
    Next morning the proprietor asked the yank how he slept the previous night "Oh" he replied. "I didn't sleep a wink atal last night as I heard one shoe falling about midnight
