- That grim gaunt tower perched upon the rock of Carrigaphooka has always been an object of interest to tourists who travel the main road from Cork to Killarney. Beyond that it figures in one of Crofton Croker's fairy tales, as the haunt of a "phooka" or malevolent fairy, little is known in the locality about it. But it also has a history and those who built and guarded it - the McCarthys of Drishane - played their part in the stormy events which make up our islands story.It is one of the few castles in County Cork, concerning which a detailed report has been written of its assault and capture.
