- (continued from previous page)When the seed is sown, the ridges are smoothened with a "fallaheen". Sometimes, the neighbours help each other in sowing the "skollawns", and they return the work by helping the farmers who helped them at the crop. When the stalks are fully grown, they are sprayed with blue-stone and washing-soda by means of a spraying machine.
They are usually sprayed three times a to protect them from being destroyed by the American "blight". The "blight" comes during soft foggy weather about the end of July. The potatoes are dug with a spade or a plough. If they are dug with the plough, the men pick them, but the woman and children pick them if they are dug with a spade.
They are stored in a pit until the end of November, and they are stored in lofts for the Winter. The name of a small potatoe is a "creahawn". The various kinds of potatoes are:- Great Scots, Aran Banners, Aran Chiefs, Aran Victors, Champions, Queens, Summer Wonders, Kerr-pinks, Epicures, Skerries, Coleens, Up - to - Dates, White Elephants and Aran Pilots.(continues on next page)
