- The Irish people have many old proverbs which they regard as a kind of motto. They generally give advice of some kind which however is not always followed. A few of them are as follows:
"A stitch in time saves nine" means it is much better to do a thing at once that to let it go by. This is strengthened by another proverb "never put off till to-morrow what you can do to-day."
Many of the proverbs have reference to the every-day life of the people amongst whom they are used and were perhaps instituted for their guidance. "Better late than never" and it is never too late to mend" advise us that however late in life we may repent and change our way God is willing to receive us back. "A long time coming comes at last" warns us that though we may play with fire for a long time and go unscathed we are sure to get burned in the end.
"As long as the pitcher is going to the well it gets broken at last," "a hatching hen gathers no fat", and "a rolling stone gathers no moss" are used in connection with bad company and infer that if you avoid it you are never(continues on next page)- Collector
