    implicated in a quarrel, but if you go looking for trouble you are sure to get it.
    "All is not gold that glitters" and never judge a book by the cover" warn us to beware of appearances as they are often deceptive. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush implicates that it is better to be sure of one thing than gamble on a large amount and as often happens you may lose all. "Patience and perseverence carried the snail to Jerusalem" and "slow and steady wins the race" tell us if we fail to try and try again and you will certainly suceed in the end.
    We have a few examples of proverbs contradicting one another such as "many hands make light work and "too many cooks spoil the broth." Another instance "is always look before you leap" which is corrected by "he who hesitates is lost." There are many more beside the above mentioned but these will suffice to show the use the Irish people made and still make of them.
    These facts were related to me by my father Michael Mac Carthy on June 4th 1938.
