farmers near by, by the first person that went to the well on that morning. People also went and got bounds water on that morning and usually preserved it for the year, this water was famous as a cure for sore eyes and its renown as a cure for whooping cough couldn't be superseded.
A story is told that many years ago a gypsy visited a certain house in the locality on May-day. During her visit she borrowed a drop of milk. When it came to churning day it failed all efforts to turn the cream into butter. The charm thus out on the milk remained on it for twelve months.
There were also supposed to be ways to remove the charms. One of them was to redden an iron in the fire, then to go out and call the person whom the suspicion was on, the heat of the iron would make that person run. When he would go out into the cream would be in the churn. People also when entering a house while the churn was being made, had to twist it for one turn, if he didn't do this he was supposed to the "evil eye". This was related to me by Mr Patrick Hurley.
