    On a dreary winter's night.

    The very first shock.
    Our good ship got.
    For mercy we did call
    Our gallant ship in splinters went,
    And in the deep water all.
    A violent surf upon a rock,
    My mangled corpse did throw.
    Whilst all my brave companions,
    Lay in the deep below.

    In this doleful situation,
    I lay until next day.
    In watching of the foaming tides.
    In this ridiculous way.
    Far from the shore, I was espied.
    Though many was the tear,
    That flowed to the safety,
    Of each Irish heart sincere.

    About ten in the morning,
    A small boat, I espied.
    Coming fast towards me.
    To me, no little joy,
    Manned by five brave fellows,
    Who timely did succeed,
