- The Golden Lag
About half way up Owen Hill is a hollow known as the 'Golden Lag'. It is said that a battle was fought at the foot of Owen Hill, near Cullinagh Lake, between the O'Donovan of Castle Donovan and the McCarthy of Castlemore. The McCarthy had the victory and slew all the O'Donovans.
It was the custom in those days for the chieftains to bury their gold and valuables by night for safe. So when all the O'Donovans were slain, the gold for which the McCarthy pursued them was never recovered and the place where it was supposed to be hidden was called 'The Golden Lag'.Milly Jagoe
