  1. My grandfather knew another man who was going to Cork alone, with a few firkins of butter. He got very anxious for a smoke of tobacco about midnight but had no match. There was no light in the houses as he passed by, but he came to a house very close to the road that was well lighted up. He said to himself, "this is a God send. I'll go in and light my pipe". So he did. There was a corpse being waked. The corpse was on the table and candles were lighting and there was a good crowd of people at the wake. He knelt down and said a prayer. When he stood up a man gave him a big glass of whiskey. He lit his pipe, and went his way taking special notice of the place, so that he could have a good look
