highest be proclaimed king". By this suggestion he thought he would easily out do all the other birds, particularly the wren, with his great wings. At a given signal all the birds flew into the air. From the start it was obvious that the eagle would go the highest. Higher and higher he flew, at long last all the other birds came to ground, so the eagle would be king after all.
Seeing himself just near the clouds the eagle began to rejoice, and thought of the foolish wren. Now that he had beaten all the others, he began to descend quickly, spreading out his wings he heard a sharp whistle and looking up beheld the wren above him. The clever little bird seeing her opportunity flew underneath the eagles wings and hid there. When the eagle began to descend she came out and flew above the "big bird."
The eagle seeing himself defeated came to ground, and the wren was proclaimed "King of the Birds"
