- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)also a barrel of water on the floor which is used for cooling hot irons. There are numerous old horse shoes and scraps of iron scattered all over the floor. The smith makes shoes for jennets and donkeys and shoes them. He also makes iron gates and repairs various kinds of agricultural machinery. His chief work in the open air is the banding of wheels, for this purpose he makes a large fire of turf some distance from from the forge to heat the iron bands. When they are red hot he sledges them on to the wheels. In the Summer he shoes horses outside. In former times people came to the forge to hear the latest news and to discuss politics.
In those days when people could not read or buy newspapers they used to come to the forge to hear the weekly paper read.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
