  1. A cow was killed and the flesh which is called beef is kept for food. The tallow was kept for making candles. The tallow was "rendered" that is cut up in small pieces and put into a pot which was hung over the fire. The heat of the fire turned the tallow into a liquid.
    Then a piece of white cotton thread was got for a wick and it was tied across the centre of a nail and the nail was put across the top of the mould and the thread was left hanging down inside in the middle of the mould.
    Then a big knot was put in the thread at the top of the mould to close the hole. A soft sod of turf was got and a hole put in
