Those teachers mentioned knew Irish well , but they did not teach it owing to the laws then in force. Children were punished for using any Irish word, and in time Irish ceased to exist as the spoken language of the people.
Books were very scarce and much valued. The readers sanctioned by the Commissioners of National Education are still preserved in some houses in this locality. The arithmetic used in the very old schools was the “Vosther” but it is impossible to get a copy of the work now in any place.
