A curious belief existed in some places about the whooping cough. It was believed that a man with a white horse could always give a cure, so whenever the whooping cough attacked the children the mother was always on the look-out for a man riding a white horse. As he passed along she shouted, "man with the white horse what will cure the "chin" cough." Whatever the man recommended was supposed to cure it; but very often there was no answer or maybe an uncivil one according to the humour of the horseman.
