In former times in my parish the schools used be in small cabins. There was one in Daniel Keane's farm in Moygue about 100 years ago and another in Grassyard. The cabins used be built up against the ditches. The boys and girls used have to carry a sod of turf each every day to make a fire. They used write on coarse slates with pencil stones which were got out of a neighbouring quarry. One of the Poor Scholars (name) was Mr Croke and the payment was 2d per week. The first boys' school in my parish was where Maurice Fitzgibbon's cow shed is now and the girls' was where Cornelius Buckley's house is now.- Collector
