  1. In former years Indian meal was exported to Ireland and people ground it themselves into flour and from it they made their own bread. The kinds of bread generally used were potato cakes, stampy and oatmeal bread.
Potato cakes were made with mashed potatoes and flour and the potatoes made the cake very heavy. Some people make these cakes nowadays.
In former years people put marks on cakes before putting on to bake. This mark helped to bake it quickly. People had many vessels in which they baked bread. The following were the most common, an oven, Bastible, and a pot oven.
People also baked it in front of the fire with a support to it but that was very seldom done here.
In olden times people also baked their bread on griddles. A griddle is a round flat piece of iron with two handles one to each side.
