- (continued from previous page)fell from his hand and he fell to the ground shot through the body. Mac Lure though suffering from a would in his leg sprang to help him but saw it was all over. Kelly who had seen the fall of his companion and the capture of the other attempted to escape by creeping along the bank of the River but was soon captured by the Military.
Mac Lure and Kelly were handcuffed and led away but Crowley where he had fallen until the Military had searched the Wood and not finding any other rebel they returned to where Crowley lay.
They had compassion on him and they made a stretcher of their rifles and carried him along the River bank and placed a great coat under his head and covered him with another. The military doctor examined him and seeing that he had but a short time to live, asked him could he do anything for him. He then asked for a priest. They then sent for Fr. O'Connell Curate of Kildorrery and a short time after he arrived Crowley died.
