- My home is situated in the Fermoy townland, and it is also situated in the Parish of Fermoy and the Barony of Barrymore. There are about thirty-five or forty families in the Fermoy townland and some of the most common family names are - Roches, Walshes, Fitzgeralds. There are many old men living in this locality and one of the oldest of them is Mr. Flannigan. He lives very near my home and he has a shop across the road from my house. That is a sign that this is a very healthy locality. They are not so good at speaking Irish, as this was not an Irish-speaking district. This townland is a very modern townland. It owes its origin to John Anderson, a Glasgow merchant, bought the land around here about one hundred and forty years ago. At this time the Government was looking for a site to build a Barracks. Anderson offered to sell a site at a cheaper rate and two Barracks were built and after a while the town grew up around them. The territory around Fermoy was in possesion of the O'Keeffes, O'Duggans, and O'Lehanes before the arrival of the Normans.
