- There are not many forges in this locality at the present day, though I have heard from some of the older inhabitants that there were a great number of them there long ago. But at that time the horses and other animals were more used for work and other purposes than they are to day. They are two or three forges in this locality at present and some of the old forges are to be seen partly knocked down. The names of the smiths are Mr J. Galligan and Mr Murray. Both forges are situated on the bank of the river which is very convenient to the smiths as they can cool the red hot iron in the water before shoeing. From what I have heard about the forges in days gone by, I understand that they were very much frequented by the people who used to play cards and tell stories there during the long Winter nights.
The black smith has many tools such as an anvil, pincers, tongs, sledge, bellows and hammer. In days gone by the smiths made all sorts of farm implements i.e. ploughs, harrows, spades, shovels, pikes, axes &e. but these are made at the present time(continues on next page)- Collector
