- Long ago a man named Heffernan was a schoolmaster in Castlelyons.
Every day in the middle of the day he used go up to the village for a drink. One day two of the big boys were absent. During the day the master got mind for a drink. He crossed the river and went up the back-way to a public-house. Inside before him were the two boys. They were having a pint each. He brought them back down to the school and gave them twelve slaps each.Often long ago the boys would 'slinge' from school for a whole month. When they would come back to school and Mr. Heffernan would ask them where they were they would say - going round the ditches. There was a hedge school in the corner of a field at Ballymacsimon, Castlelyons, and the priest used say mass near the same place in penal days.- Collector
