- The old houses were built of mud and are known as mud walled cabins. The roof was made of thatch. The beds were called settle beds. It acted as a seat in in the day time and it was converted as a bed in the night. They had no grates or fireplaces but the fire was on the ground and they would have a hole in the wall to cause a draught. They used put a wad of straw in the hole to stop the fire. The chimney was made of mud. They used have a hole in the wall with a bag to it as a window. There are not many half-doors now.
