- The people long ago used only eat brown bread. This was made from wheat ground with stone crushers. It was very brown because bran was left in it. Milk or water used be mixed with the flour when making a cake enough for a couple of days at the time. They wouldn't like to eat it too fresh. The people used put crosses on the pot of the cake in order it would bake well. The bastable is the name of the vessel they used bake the bread.
