    Also old men used to go round from door to door singing and beating a tongs at the same time:-
    "Under the tree I fed my hen,

    Every good woman likes her cock,
    And I love my cock too.

  2. When I was a little girl (Máire Bean Uí Coileáin) my mother (R.I.P) who came from Achill Sound. Co. Mayo (a native Irish Speaker) was always careful to take a red coal from the fire and drop it into the water that had just washed feet. She too, always would make certain to "throw out" the same water.
    I thought it strange, but quietly made up my mind that she was odd.
