- (continued from previous page)took their departure thence when what is known as "Fort Westmore Land" was built on its crest towards the close of the 18th century. Connected with this fort's construction, as an officer of engineers, was General Vallency, who though an Englishman was the most enthusiastic champion of the Irish language to be found in his day.
When the Australian colonists began to protest against any further convicts from the British Islands being sent out to Botany Bay and other penal settlements (for Irish male convicts) in the Southern Hemisphere. The British government then decided on making Spike Island a penal settlement for Irish male convicts. This it continued to be from about 1847; its suitability being enhanced, by any danger of their out break being unlikely on account of the soldiers who they garrisoned. Spike Island and others still continued to do so. It served as a prison during the late civil war, though indeed several prisoners escaped by means of(continues on next page)- Collector
