- The following is an account of a hurling match given by Mr. Timothy Ahern residing at Ballygarvan. Long ago hurling was much the same as it is now. There used to be a hurling team in every townland.
When they wanted to play a match they used to pick out the best men out of every team. There used be fifteen men at each side. The people long ago had no togs or jerseys, but their own shirt or pants. They had no goal-posts in olden times but the four corners of the field. The field they played in was generally square. They used have a ball called a slitter. It was of a round. It was a leather ball and it was fairly large. The balls long ago were made out of corks and leather and it used hop like any ordinary ball. The balls made of corks and leather lasted much longer(continues on next page)- Collector
