About forty years ago the Briens of Ballycroneen were very sick with the measles...

    (continued from previous page)
Mrs Brien went up to her and asked her if she could give her any cure. The witch told her to go down to Smiths field in Ballyshane where the sheep were and to pick up the hard dropping of the sheep. The witch told her when she would have that done to bring the droppings home and boil them and that it would cure it. The oldest child knew what they were doing and was crying. The mother sent her husband to Churchtown for porter. When he returned she mixed the boiled sheeps droppings and some porter and gave it to the oldest child first and then to the rest and it cured them all. The witch was better known as Maura Rua.
